Joinery
A joiner works with timber to create a variety of structures integral to many buildings. This can include staircases, windows, doors, furniture and more. As a joiner, you will make and install these structures and fittings.
Course length - Typically 4 years.
Location - Your time will be divided between working on our construction sites and attending college on block release. Here is a typical example of how that time could be split:
- 1st year: 19 weeks in college
- 2nd year: 11 weeks in college
- 3rd year: 1 week in college
- 4th year: 1 week in college

- Store resources ready for use.
- Erect and dismantle working platforms.
- Contribute to efficient working practices.
- Install first and second fixing components.
- Erect structural carcassing components.
- Produce joinery setting out details.
- Mark out joinery from setting out details.
- Manufacture joinery products.
- CITB Health and Safety Test.
- Maintain internal and external timber components.
- Contribute to establishing the operational area.
- Contribute to the progress of operations.
- Assist with the organisation of resources.
- Co-ordinate and install first and second fixing.
- Components and finishings.
- Co-ordinate and erect structural carcassing components.
Skills you will learn -
- Measuring, marking up, cutting, shaping, fitting and finishing timber.
- Using a range of hand and power tools.
- Installing floor joists, floorboards, roof trusses and wall partitions.
- Fitting interiors such as staircases, doors, skirting boards, cupboards and kitchens.
- Drawing and working with technical drawings.
Career pathways - Joinery offers a broad spectrum of work, and you can find something to specialise in if you wish to do so. You could work self employed or apply your skills within an established business. Here are a few examples of jobs you could do using your trade:
- Kitchen / bathroom installer.
