Taper / Dryliner
Tapers create walls and rooms in buildings. They use plasterboard to hide pipes and wires, make space for insulation and smooth out uneven surfaces. The role involves measuring, cutting and attaching plasterboard (fixing), and sealing over joints between boards to smooth the edges (finishing).
Course length - 2.5 years
Course location - fully site based. You do not need any formal qualifications and won't sit any exams. You will build evidence of your practical ability, learning on the job while being paid.
After you have built up 2 years on-site experience, an NVQ assessor will be assigned and visit you on site. You will build a portfolio of evidence to prove you’re working at the required standard.

- Conforming to efficient working practices.
- Moving, handling and storing.
- Finishing dry lining walls and ceilings.
Skills you will learn -
- Measuring and cutting plasterboard to the right size.
- Fixing boards to metal or timber ceiling joists.
- Cutting boards to fit around doorways and windows.
- Sealing joints using fillers and adhesives.
- Taping over seals and applying plaster to the boards.
- Sanding down surfaces ready for painting and decorating.
