Springfield Properties, one of Scotland’s leading housebuilders, has donated two water containers to Elgin Allotments Association to help maintain the plants, especially during the summer months.

Elgin Allotments Association, 10 years ago, transformed the corner of Forteath Avenue and Wards Road into a thriving community Garden share with various plots, shared fruit areas and wildflower beds.

With the capacity to store up to 2000L of rainwater, the containers will support plant growth and save allotment workers from carrying heavy barrels of water.

Growing a range of fruit and veg like carrots, runner beans and courgettes, the Association is keen to expand to a second site in Elgin by 2022 with talks underway with Moray Council.

Graham Milton from Elgin Allotments Association said:

“As a community group, we rely on donations from our members and organisations in our area to support the work we do. We’re grateful Springfield has supplied two water containers which will play a huge part in the success of next year’s growing season.

“In addition to bringing members of our community together, there are a number of health benefits that come with allotment gardening. It’s great for physical activity, mental well-being and social inclusion for the gardener, on top of the satisfaction of growing fresh produce for the table. This is why we’re working with the Council to offer additional plots for eager allotmenteers at a second site in Elgin.”

Springfield Managing Director (North), Dave Main, said:

“At Springfield, we understand the importance of a community within our developments as well as the wider area. We look to support local charities and groups wherever possible and initiatives like this that are friendly to the environment and promote biodiversity are of particular interest to us.   We’re delighted to be able to donate water containers to Elgin Allotments Association so they can continue their great work.”
